FAQs
How do we join Horizon and register as campers?
Do you have a Meal Plan?
All past Horizon campers in good standing receive an open invitation to come back.
New campers must be sponsored and vouched for by past or current Horizon campers. New campers will have an opportunity during registration to tell us who referred/sponsored them. Note that new campers can’t sponsor other new campers.
ALL persons staying in camp must be registered, pay dues, and sign up for volunteer and Strike shifts. Campers can host guests but guest cannot use camper only amenities.
How and when do we sign up for volunteer and Strike shifts?
At some point before August, we will email all registered campers a link to our volunteer and shift forms. You will be required to sign up at least two shifts during the week, plus at least one Strike shift on Saturday.
If you are arriving later in the week, you must still sign up for the necessary number of shifts. And all campers are required to pick one Strike shift on Saturday, no matter what day they arrive.
What is Saturday Strike? Is it required?
Yes!! We need all hands on deck for our camp Strike on Saturday (all day before the Man Burn). We build Horizon in one week, then must take it all down in two day. And much of strike will involve cleaning up (de-MOOPing) to ensure that the playa ends up in better shape than when we arrived.
We strike during the day and then all head out to the Man Burn that evening. Please plan your time so you can be physically and mentally capable of meaningful participation on Saturday during Strike.
MOOP - what is the deal?
This is THE MOST IMPORTANT PART OF OUR WORK PLAN. In some previous years we received a Yellow/Red rating by BMOrg for our camp, and MUST continue improving this year or else we will not be a placed camp at future burns. We have a huge space - 250’ x 200’, plus 200’ x 100’ across Esplanade. Each morning we will have MOOP teams that go across our public spaces in addition to Saturday Strike. You are also responsible for de-MOOPing your personal camp space, and packing out ALL of your personal trash.
Do we have an electrical grid to hook our RVs/ShiftPods/Yurts into?
Yes! We have an optional fee for a hookup to the main power grid in camp. Depending on your needs, there are 2 levels of power service. The cost is per hookup, not per person, so for example an RV or tent with multiple people only needs one person in your group to choose and pay for the hookup.
Note that we do not allow any RV or external generators to be run in camp.
15 Amp 120V Circuit (standard US electrical outlet) Enough for a small AC and some lights in a tent or camper van.
30 Amp 120V Circuit (for a TT30P RV plug) Most RVs use this.
50 Amp 240V Circuit - Not supported
What about RV Pump Outs or Water Fills?
We purchase a specific number of requested pump out for RV campers who request them in their Housing Form (Will be sent out along with volunteer signup form). When you check in to Horizon, we will give you your prepaid vouchers for Pump-Outs. It will then be your sole responsibility to flag the pump out truck down and have your RV pumped out. Please do not go to any leads complaining about full tanks.
Are there camp showers?
We have basic burner-style showers. Each camper get 2-3 showers through-out the week. Showers are limited to 2gallons per shower. If campers do not respect the limits, showers will be turned off.
Yes, we do. We have two chefs, Colin and Jake that take turns feeding the village. Everyone is also required to signup for a kitchen shift.
Camp dues are used to pay for our infrastructure on the playa for our campers - dedicated camp space, showers, meals, a private kitchen and lounge area, and the cost of building, transporting, and storing these amenities. Our kitchen area has microwaves, grills, and a sink for greywater disposal. Please bring your own reusable plates/mugs/silverware to cut down on trash.
I’d like to DJ at Horizon! Or - my mom/BFF/college roommate is an amazing DJ in Tulum, and wants to play a closing set.
We use the principle of radical participation for choosing the DJs who play the limited number of slots during burn week. We do not pay our DJs - or pay for them to get to the playa.
Our Music Co-Leads Jason and Shawn review all of the DJ submissions and choose our lineup each year.
What do my camp dues pay for? How is our budget planned for DISTRIKT?
