Camp with us

Interested in camping with Horizon?

We are an amazing group of (often return) campers whose ingenuity, creativity, dedication, and whimsy build our home every year on the playa. Our sweat equity ensures that we have an inviting and extremely fun and rewarding space for everyone who visits.

In order to foster a wonderful experience for all, camping with us does have some requirements…

  • Be a camp member in good standing or come with a reference from a past or current camper in good standing.

  • Willingness to jump in and help! To build and maintain our camp community requires that everyone contribute to Horizon. We all cook, we all clean, we all minimize MOOP (matter out of place). It takes all of us to make it work. This is non-negotiable.

  • Attend a “Get to know the camp” zoom meeting (mandatory for new campers; encouraged for returners). Emails with details will be sent in early August.

  • Volunteer and complete works shifts on playa. Build, bartend, help feed us, and strike. We need each other to make it all happen. This is also non-negotiable.

  • Commitment to Burning Man’s Leave No Trace principle. No one wants to deal with someone else’s MOOP.

  • MOOP ratings determine whether we can return in the future as a placed camp. We will have organized daily sweeps and campers are expected to pick up and properly dispose of anything they find. Cigarette butts, plastic water bottles, and general trash are dings against us (and make for an icky environment).

  • You MUST carry out all of your personal trash. Come with bags and be prepared to lug your garbage out with you when you depart.

  • We have a zero tolerance policy for sexual misconduct, violence, discrimination, or general dramatic nonsense. We will ask you to leave camp immediately.

  • We are not a “plug-and-play” camp to act as a setting for Instagram photos or product placement. De-commodification is a foundational Burning Man principle; violating it is disrespectful to fellow campers and the volunteers who donate their time and energy to create Horizon.

  • Accountability. If you register to camp with us, you must be accountable and show up for your shifts and camp strike.

  • Stay in good standing. If you miss your volunteer shifts, make others feel uncomfortable, or do not abide by the Burning Man ethos, you will not be able to camp with us again and may be asked to leave on the spot. We all go to the Burn to have fun and it’s not fun to pick up extra shifts or strike twice as long because others decided not to participate.

  • Respect for yourself, for others, for the playa, and for the contributions of our team. A lot of volunteer work goes into making a successful camp.

  • You MUST be over 21 . We run a bar on playa and must comply with local liquor laws.

Thanks for sharing what’s expected of me. Can you tell me what my dues cover?

  • Chef prepared breakfast and lunch every day in our shared dining area. Plus snacks available any time you want them.

  • A full bar! Horizon campers have unlimited access.

  • Shade structures for tents and shiftpods. It gets hot out there and we want to keep you cool.

  • Horizon only porta potties and showers. Water is scarce in the desert so we ask that you limit yourself to two showers while at the Burn. We operate on an honor code.

  • Communal gathering spaces. We have a main stage for DJs, dancing, and wellness; elevated platforms for cuddle puddles; and, lounge areas peppered throughout the campsite for uber-local hangs.

  • A power grid and guaranteed pump outs and water refills for RVs.

  • Each other! Lots of time with all of the amazing humans who make Horizon the camp that it is.

We pride ourselves on embracing the 10 principles of Burning Man and building camaraderie by doing, dancing, and sustaining together. Our camp members hail from all parts of the US — and the world! — and everyone who participates in Horizon volunteers their time and effort to make it a magical experience.

We give preference to returning campers, especially long time Horizonites. We will open spaces for new campers in June, once we have a headcount on who is returning. We limit camp to 120 people (no more than 25 Burner newbies) to better foster a sense of community and provide adequate amenities for our crew.

If building, doing and creating community is what you are looking for, then we are thrilled to have you!
